The Spanish title of his debut, Amores Perros, has numerous meanings. In Amores Perros there are few human deaths but ideals, hopes, and dreams are obliterated. It was the first film in a trilogy exploring the theme of death. In 2000, director Alejandro González Iñárittu released his first feature-length film, Amores Perros. Recently, Natalie also inducted Iñárittu’s 21 Grams into our Greats section. With her permission, we are re-posting the beautiful piece in celebration of Alejandro González Iñárittu and his newest film Birdman, which opened this week in American theaters. It's been several months now and, like Babel 13 years ago, it still weighs on me. But of all the films I saw it's the one I can't get out of my head.

I saw it at a Mexican film festival at my local indie-it wasn't my favorite movie that I saw (definitely Y Tu Mama Tambien, an all-time favorite), but I still enjoyed it. I liked The Departed much more and that's the one I was rooting for that year, but The Departed, much as I still enjoy it, kind of came and went while Babel lingered.įast forward 13 years and I finally see Amores Perros. But I found that my mind just kept going back to it and I couldn't really shake it. I watched it with my family and none of is loved it-a bit too heavy for our tastes at the time.

I was 14 when it came out and it was the first time I was making an effort to see the Oscar nominated movies. The first movie I can remember just really sticking with me-regardless of how much I actually liked it-for weeks after seeing it was Babel. I forgot about the film until I recently went back to really understand the filmic techniques and gain a greater appreciation for this film. The non-linear structure tying the three stories seemed more gimmicky than anything. Amores Perros was a film, that when I saw it, confused me.
